More about Lapis Lazuli
The lazurite mineral pigment has been used in Egyptian tomb paintings, and by Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Mined from Afghan mountain valleys, lapis lazuli rock (a mixture of minerals with lazurite as the main constituent) was transported to Egypt and Europe, where it was used in jewellery and paint pigment. Europeans called the expensive powdered pigment ultramarine (meaning ‘over the sea’).
We source our lapis lazuli mineral pigment from a natural supplier specializing in rare and hard-to-find materials for artists. Select pieces of lapis lazuli stone are sourced from one of the oldest lazurite mines in the world (Shar Shakh, Afghanistan) and used to produce the lapis lazuli pigment. In our family-run dye-works in Tuscany (Italy), we use this pigment to produce the purest NATURAL ultramarine blue color on soft 100% merino wool.
Knitting with this yarn, you will be carrying on a six-thousand-year-old artisan tradition.
These mineral dyes are free from synthetic ingredients and are often used in natural cosmetics. This makes a perfect yarn for our skin.
Hint: After the first yarn cake, the shipping cost is much reduced for each additional yarn cake added.
