This pretty pouch is knit as a rectangle, which is then folded in the middle and closed by a braided cable. A simple pattern that includes inside pockets for a mobile phone and bank cards. Perfect for those days when you need to be light and stylish!
Materials & Tools
Materials: 2 x 50 g yarn cakes of any color of Cotton Ribbon
Needles: 4 mm straight needles, one cable needle (or a double pointed needle), one tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- k = knit
- p = purl
- c6f (6 stitches cable front) = Slip 3 stitches onto the cable needle and hold it in the front, knit next 3 stitches from the left-hand needle and knit 3 stitches from the double pointed needle
- c6b (6 Stitches Cable Back) = Slip 3 stitches onto the cable needle and hold it in the back, knit next 3 stitches from the left-hand needle and knit 3 stitches from the double pointed needle.
The Directions
This pretty simple pouch is realized with double stranded knitting technique: all you need to do is to take one end of yarn from inside each of the yarn cakes, align them, and use them as one strand when you knit.
BAG (front and back knitted as a whole piece):
Half linen border (front)
Using two strands of yarn together, cast on 35
Row 1: *K1, bring yarn to front and sl 1 st purlwise, bring yarn to back, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K2, *bring yarn to front, sl 1 st, bring yarn to back, k1, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat row 1 to 4, 3 more times.
Core of the bag
Row 17: K
Row 18: P Continue alternating one row K and one row P until piece measures around 20 cm from the cast on edge.
Half linen border (back)
Row 68: *K1, bring yarn to front and sl 1 st purlwise, bring yarn to back, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 69: Purl
Row 70: K2, *bring yarn to front, sl 1 st, bring yarn to back, k1, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 71: Purl.
Repeat row 68 to 71, 3 more times.
Cast off.
BRAIDED CABLE BAND
Using two strands of yarn together, cast on 11 stitches.
Rnd 1: knit 11
Rnd 2: purl 11
Rnd 3: knit 1, c6f, knit 4
Rnd 4: purl 11
Rnd 5: knit 11
Rnd 6: purl 11
Rnd 7: knit 4, c6b, knit 1
Rnd 8: purl 11 Repeat rnd 1-8 x6 more times, until you reach around 19 cm length (width of the pouch)
MOBILE PHONE POCKET
Using one strand on yarn, cast on 30 stitches
Row 1: K
Row 2: P
Repeat row 1 and 2, until piece measures around 8 cm from the cast on edge.
Last 3 rows: K
Cast off.
CARDS POCKET
Using one strand on yarn, cast on 14 stitches.
Row 1: K
Row 2: P
Repeat row 1 and 2, until piece measures around 7 cm from the cast on edge.
Cast off.
Wash gently and block each piece.
ASSEMBLY
You should have now the rectangle of the bag, the braided cable, and three pockets (1 large for the mobile phone, and 2 small card holders)
First, sew the pockets as shown in the photo at the top of the page.
Second, with the inside of the bag facing you, sew the cable edges so that when you fold the bag, the cable overlaps the transition between the two knitting styles.
